An All American Bull Frog

For 12 years now, I have been a dedicated and proud pond owner. My DIY pond was a real labor of love. I remember putting my young son down for a nap, heading out to the old hole in the ground and digging day after day! Our pond is roughly 1,000 gallons and has gone through several transformations over the years. I have learned so much about the mini eco-system at my back door.

Over the years, I have encountered many critters in my pond. We have over 30 fish: koi, butterfly koi, comets, shubunkins and the ever-important, mosquito fish. I have even wrangled a few garter snakes with BBQ tongs and a hockey stick; not an easy task I might add.

I do not relish the unwelcome visits from my feathered foe – the great blue heron. Our golden retriever has learned that the “big bird” means trouble and barks at the sky looking to chase him away. This June, we watched a frog attempt to eat a toad; apparently they are not friends. But the whole journey, thus far, has been educational, sometimes challenging but completely rewarding.

Last week, we were treated to something special, a little patriotism from our amphibious friend. A mini flag from the garden blew into the pond and our proud little American Bull Frog quickly found himself a new pad. On this, our nation’s birthday, you too, should wear your stars and stripes proudly! Happy Fourth of July.
